Haemanthus albiflos Grows under the deep shade of forest trees. In the Durban (+/- 100m elevation) and Mapamulo (+/- 800m elevation) regions they are found in leaf mould, in heavy canopy, leaf mould somewhat damp in summer. About 2"/50mm below the mould is semidecomposed Shale and/or Laterite. The layer of rock below would allow for some water to move very slowly and most likely sit below the mould for a few days before dryness sets in again. High areas of humidity. Most plants can simply be lifted by hand with no damage to the root system. Plants found in clumps of up to a few thousand closely packed (up to 100 per m2 in places). Leaves are often spotted white (maculate).
